Instructions for completing your MIYLC Application:
1. Answer all questions in the application form and press the submit button to
ensure your application has gone through.
a. The application form includes short written responses about your
experiences and ideas. We recommend you write your responses in a
separate document (like Microsoft Word or Google Docs) to ensure you do
not lose your work. Complete the application form when you have all your
written responses ready.
b. The application form also includes questions about your background (such
as your gender, race, and country of origin). We are collecting your
information for use by the Office of Global Michigan solely for the MIYLC
application process. We will not share your information with anyone outside
of OGM unless you give permission.
2. Provide a reference or letter of recommendation.
a. To complete your MIYLC application, you must have one reference or one
letter of recommendation. The final section of the application asks for your
reference or recommender’s name and contact information. Before
completing the application, think about who you would your reference or
recommender to be. Contact this person to make sure they are willing to be
your reference or recommender.
b. Your reference or recommender must be an adult who knows you and can
speak to your involvement in your school or community and your leadership
skills. This person should be able to explain why you are a great fit for the
Michigan Immigrant Youth Leadership Council (MIYLC).
c. Examples of adults who can be your reference or recommender include
group leaders, teachers, advisors/counselors, school administrators,
coaches, employers, community or faith leaders, local first responders, case
managers, and others who are familiar with your character and experience.
The selection committee will not accept references or recommendations
from family members, relatives, or guardians.
3. Ensure all application materials are submitted by June 15th, 2026.
a. If you choose to submit a letter of recommendation, the letter should be sent
to LEO-RefugeeServices@michigan.gov by June 15th, 2026.
b. If you choose to have a reference, the MIYLC team will send your reference
an email with a short survey to complete. Please remind your reference that
they will receive an email from the Office of Global Michigan. Your reference
must complete the survey by June 15th, 2026.
c. The MIYLC team will track which applications are missing a reference survey
or letter of recommendation and follow up with you and your reference or
recommender as needed. If you are concerned about your reference or
recommender missing the deadline, please reach out to LEO-
